What is Urban Data Hack?

Urban Data Hack is a data-driven Hackathon here in Belfast, which revolves around data analysis and visualisation
with the aim of improving public services in the Belfast area.

[one_half]

This event will give like-minded individuals the opportunity to use big data and analytics technologies to build innovative applications, create elegant visualisations and expose game changing trends on data driving the people, workforce and education of Belfast.

Run in partnership with Belfast City Council, Urban Data Hack will give you the chance to develop data solutions to real, socially relevant challenges using a combination of specific and open data.

It’s important to remember the prototypes created can use stakeholder data, for that reason the idea you pitch will be taken on by the backer and put to good use improving Belfast’s services.

The hackathon will give you 24 hours to create your solution. Get hands on with data and tackle problems you are passionate about. At the end, you will pitch your prototype to the people it impacts. It’s an opportunity to have your ideas heard, but mostly to be creative and have fun!

Intelligent City Council Spending

How much of the Council’s contracting spend is spent in Belfast? Are there ways we could maximise the amount of money staying in the local economy? Is lack of spend because of lack of companies and skills? And if not, how can we encourage local businesses to apply for contracts?

Recycling box weights

The weight, per route, of recycling materials lifted in the inner city recycling boxes. The data also includes data/time of collection and vehicle details. [/toggle][/toggles]

Freestyle

This one is for the creative folk out there. Using any or all available datasets, create and develop an innovative solution that you think will improve the lives of people in Belfast. There are no restrictions on this freestyle challenge.

It’s a hackathon, so try and get the data into a nice prototype application once you’ve got your analysis done.
For example, for Barriers to Recycling this could be a small mobile app to receive push notifications about waste in the area. It’s all about how you use the data!

What’s in the data?

We know the feeling, where is the data? What does the data mean? How clean is the data already?

It could take well over 24 hours just to answer these questions so we’ve aggregated data sources and we’ll run some workshops to explain the data on the day.
There will be plenty of cleaning and cleansing to do but what’s a data hack without data cleansing?

We will provide you with previously unavailable, challenge specific data sets as outlined in the challenges above, but don’t forget about the open data that’s already out there! Here are some of the publically available data sets we think might be useful when tackling the challenges.
